Job Description

Our Technologies team commercializes and delivers technologies across all three of Hatch's sectors: Metals, Energy, Infrastructure. We're a team of innovators and problem solvers who deliver custom and specialized engineering to deliver novel solutions and technologies.

For nearly a decade we have been developing unique solutions to the most challenging human automation applications using industrial robots and advanced automation methods designed for unfixtured, challenging environments. These include 2D/3D localization, force/torque, teleoperation and velocity synchronized (in-motion) applications. Hatch is an official Value Provider for ABB Robotics and works closely with their applications engineers.

Looking to take the next step in your career? Hatch is currently seeking a highly motivated Custom Robotics Application Engineer to join our Business Practices group, supporting the Technology. Reporting to the Director of Engineered Equipment and Project Managers as appropriate, you will support projects based out of our Mississauga location.

As the successful candidate, you will:

  • Design and develop custom robotic applications, using six-axis industrial robots and advanced sensing technologies for the purpose of improving operator safety and increasing operational efficiency
  • This includes the design, build, commissioning and testing of small-scale proof of concepts and full-scale prototypes of the custom robotic systems
  • Programing of ABB industrial robots (or other similar articulated robot vendors)
  • Apply engineering principles and perform calculations, including statics, dynamics, thermal analysis, fluids analysis, fluid power, and Finite Element Analysis of custom designed equipment
  • Assist the Engineering Manager/Project Manager with the delivery of proposal or project requirements as they relate to scope, cost, and schedule
  • Prepare or contribute to documents such as proposals, cost estimates, Design Basis, Mechanical Design Criteria, Operating Philosophy, Operations and Maintenance Manuals, Reports, and trade-off studies
  • Ideation and conceptual layout of a broad spectrum of custom automation and robotic systems
  • Assistance on 3D model preparation as well as drawing production using 3D CAD packages such as Solid Edge (or oversight thereof)
  • Evaluate equipment/technology selection trade-off studies, including evaluation of suitable materials of construction
  • Prepare equipment specification packages and technical project deliverables, reports, and presentations
  • Collaborate with process, structural and control system engineers and designers in the detailed design of the custom equipment, including equipment design reviews, design development and process hazard review studies
  • Support engineering procurement activities including technical bid evaluations, vendor deliverable reviews, QA, shop inspections and equipment Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
  • Provide site support, including field verification during construction
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to less experienced engineers and designers
  • Carry out assigned tasks within budget and on schedule

 You bring to the role:

  • Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering Degree from an accredited University, with 6+ years working experience
  • Experience with articulated robot applications using 2D/3D localization
  • Registration as a professional engineer (or Engineer-In-Training)
  • Willingness and ability to travel to project sites including remote sites
  • Collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • A large breadth and depth of practical experience
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated critical and creative thinking and problem solving, and brings forward solutions for our clients' toughest challenges
  • Experience in the use of procedures and workflows in the execution of projects
  • Ability to function as a member of a multidisciplinary team and coordinate mechanical activities between disciplines
  • Support and manage small teams of designers and/or EIT’s
  • Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions
