Looking to take the next step in your career? Hatch is currently seeking a highly motivated Hydropower Specialist to join our Hydropower and Dams Business Unit to provide technical leadership as well as client engagement and business development with key clients. 

This Senior Engineer will have significant experience leading hydropower studies and projects including: dam safety reviews, hydro feasibility studies, site investigations, condition assessments, engineering design, rehabilitation of existing facilities, and commissioning. Principal responsibilities will be focused on project management, senior technical leadership on projects, engineering planning, project coordination, resource management, construction support, mentoring of junior engineering staff and business development. While the majority of the efforts will be focused in Ontario the candidate will work with the global team to pursue and deliver projects across Canada and globally. This role has definite growth and management opportunities for the correct applicant.  

As the successful candidate, you will:

  • Manage projects from concept to construction
  • Provide technical expertise (for area of specialization) on projects
  • Lead and manage the process of engineering commitments in accordance with scope, schedule, budget and procedures to ensure successful project completion
  • Manage design teams for successful completion of projects
  • Be responsible for the preparation of technical memos, reports, specifications, and cost estimates
  • Seal technical documents and drawings, as required
  • Resolve overall design and project execution issues, as required
  • Lead preparation of proposals, including the development of work plans and budgets
  • Develop and implement business development plans
  • Maintain a strong client focus and a commitment to achieve positive results and building key relationships
  • Promote and maintain the application of ethical and professional practices in the execution of engineering work; work to ensure the implementation of safety and integrity principles documentation

You bring to the role:

  • Bachelor’s in Engineering (Civil/Structural / Geotechnical / Hydrotechnical / Electrical / Mechanical) from an accredited college or university
  • A minimum of 10 years of hydropower and dams related experience
  • Industry recognition as an expert in an area of expertise or specialization (e.g. concrete or embankment dam design, powerhouse design, turbine/generators, mechanical or electrical balance of plant design, flow control equipment, penstocks, etc.)
  • Experience in dam safety assessments
  • Experience in design and rehabilitation of hydropower stations and dams and related components
  • Experience in commissioning and decommissioning
  • Experience in construction supervision and contract admin
  • Proven experience in the types of analyses and design processes required by the Canadian Dam Association Dam Safety Guidelines and Practice Bulletins
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal and relationship management skills
  • Demonstrated ability in leading technical discussions, presentations, and technical reports
  • Leadership skills with a proven aptitude to mentor and develop junior engineers, designers, and technicians
  • Client responsive with a history of successful business development and client relationships
  • Ability to travel within Canada and internationally on short term assignments, as required
  • Registration or eligibility to be registered, and licensed to practice as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario
