Job Description

As a Risk Based Inspection Specialist with our Asset Integrity Team, you will play a key role in the operations of our Saint John Refinery. The inspections that you perform facilitate continuous improvement of inspection programs, processes, and operations, ensuring our assets operate in an efficient and safe manner. Our Asset Integrity Team has a mandate to ensure that Irving Oil maintains a leading edge on the industry while conforming to regulatory requirements. Under the guidance of the Area Manager and Senior Inspectors, you will support this mandate by conducting and managing inspection activities to ensure that all assets are fit for continued service while also ensuring internal integrity processes and procedures are maintained and followed. Approximately 50% of your time will be spent in the plant, physically inspecting fixed equipment and piping.

Your roles and responsibilities:

  • Facilitate problem solving, root cause and fixed equipment risk management processes.

  • Assess the condition/degradation of fixed equipment to defined industry/company standards, recommend and advocate solutions.

  • Determine how to maximize equipment up-time, optimize any shutdowns, and prevent future corrosion.

  • Efficiently execute large work scopes within allotted budget without sacrificing quality or schedule

  • Work with cross-functional teams (operations, engineers, technicians) to develop inspection strategies for fixed equipment including contract inspectors and maintenance engineers to find root causes for asset integrity problems.

  • Supports materials engineering to address any degradation issues, e.g. cracking, corrosion, erosion, as required.

  • Demonstrate safety practices with all procedures.

  • Ensure that all asset integrity processes and procedures are maintained and followed.

  • Provide inspection coverage for major and maintenance projects.

  • Participate in on call rotation

  • Evaluate data involving the use of corrosion rates, remaining life, level 1 fitness for service, and RBI.

  • Perform documented audits in accordance with the company standards and practices.

  • Maintain reporting and record keeping to department policy and standards.

Professional skills

  • Safety as-a-way-of-life mindset along with a mechanical and/or materials engineering aptitude.

  • Strong knowledge of all types of fixed equipment and piping.

  • Previous experience in damage mechanism identification and corrosion analysis is an asset.

  • Analytical mindset to perform risk analyses in specified areas of the refinery

  • Experience developing inspection plans based on RBI methodologies.

  • Project budget management experience.

  • Able to work in the field: this includes working in year-round weather conditions, able to bend, climb, stoop, kneel, crawl, etc. and able to lift up to 20lbs. You must be comfortable with high elevation climbing, working at heights, and in enclosed spaces. You must be able to wear full PPE as required by safety standards.

  • Strong analytical skills; you enjoy getting to the root cause of issues and creating plans to address them.

  • Willingness to learn and adhere to all company standards, industry recommended practices, codes and standards.

  • A focus on continuous improvement; able to work with others to come up with solutions that minimize downtime and maximize equipment function, minimize refinery risks.

  • Experience dealing with multiple priorities and deadlines. Strong technical report writing skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong attention to detail. Strong computer skills and willingness to learn new programs.

  • Knowledge of MS office applications, particularly Word, Excel, Visio and PowerPoint.

  • Experience with Meridium Asset History database considered an asset.

Education and experience

  • Certified to API, mechanical engineering (mechanical, materials, chemical, etc.), or equivalent work experience.

  • 5+ years of experience in an industrial plant or refinery setting considered an asset.

  • API certifications 570, 571, 510 or 653, and / or NDE certifications are a definite asset.

  • Must have a Class 5 Driver’s License.
