Grow for Tomorrow is an exciting new initiative at Irving Oil that will help our organization meet the opportunities and challenges associated with the Global Energy Transition. You could be a part of projects including, but not limited to, Renewable Energy projects, Hydrogen and Biofuels projects, Carbon Capture and Sequestration projects, and Clean Fuel Regulations projects. We are seeking Project Controls Specialists at intermediate or senior levels to support projects, typically ranging between $50,000 and $50,000,000 at the refinery, on sites outside the refinery and across our supply chain.

Your Roles and Responsibilities:  

  • Develop, implement, and direct the Project Controls program for energy transition projects 

  • Collaborate with other Project Controls groups and professionals within impacted  
    Irving Oil business units / Operating Areas

  • Lead the development and implementation of the Project Controls framework for energy transition projects

  • Implement a Project Controls reporting process

  • Work with project teams to create an “industry good practice” Project Controls culture

  • Participate and provide Project Controls leadership during the project lifecycle

  • Review and evaluate vendor cost estimates and schedule proposals as required

  • Review project cost and schedule trend performance. Provide evaluation of recovery opportunities where required

  • Maintain advanced knowledge of the functionality of automated cost, schedule, and project task management systems

  • Provide day to day coaching to direct reports and project team members 

  • Inform and contribute to the training of Project Controls team members 

  • Develop practices and procedures in accordance with industry best practices

  • Identify and communicate continuous improvement opportunities

  • Lead and/or participate in project review meetings

  • Other duties as assigned 

Professional skills 

  • Excellent communication skills; written and verbal

  • Strong presentation and data analyst skills; able to provide meaningful, accurate reports with recommendations 

  • Comfortable facing ambiguity and applying strong organizational skills to establish order   

  • Advanced knowledge of cost and schedule management systems

  • Proven ability to meet deadlines

  • Must have a strong understanding cost estimating and scheduling

  • Leadership skills with ability to coach and mentor junior team members  

  • Proficient with MS Office:  Excel, Word, PowerPoint 

  • Working knowledge of ERP and Asset Management software

  • Working knowledge of schedule management software like MS Project and / or Oracle P6 Primavera

  • Must possess a strong understanding of project delivery phases, activities performed in each phase, and associated deliverables, consistent with the FEL process

  • Must be familiar with Risk Management techniques and participate in Schedule Risk Analysis

  • Must have strong interpersonal and collaboration skills

  • Must be skilled in the application and methods of scheduling and progress measurement as contained in AACE and PMI standard practices and earned value management techniques

  • Capable of managing impact of change and trends, and impacts to CPI / SPI

  • Strong work ethic, produces accurate and credible deliverables, meets deadlines

Travel 

  • Some travel may be required.

Education and experience

  • Post-secondary education in Business, Engineering, or equivalent experience. 

  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in a directly related role

  • Project Management experience an asset

  • PMP (Project Management Professional) designation an asset

  • Experience in an industrial environment an asset

  • Must have experience in a project controls environment
