Job Description

What you can expect in a typical day

We are seeking a Senior Process Safety Data Analyst to join our team at our refinery in Saint John, New Brunswick. In this position, you will be responsible for development, implementation, and execution of key PSM reporting and analysis.  Additionally, you will audit, maintain, and provide guidance as a Subject Matter Expert for the overall PSM Program* as defined within IOL Refining GP by providing recommendations for improvement that mitigate risk to our organization. 

*The Risk Based Process Safety Management Program is based on the Center for Chemical Process Safety Guidelines and is committed to protecting refinery employees, surrounding community and the environment by developing engineering and management practices to prevent or mitigate catastrophic releases of chemicals, hydrocarbons, and other hazardous materials as well as employee safety.

Your roles and responsibilities:

  • Maintain process safety performance reporting including commentary and insight into trends, with purpose to prevent incident escalation or recurrence and reduce costs associated with unplanned process safety events.

  • Identify opportunities for improvement and champion the implementation of recommendations (eg. Define capital project requirements for risk mitigation and/or provide data to support acceleration of a capital project) to reduce the risk profile and process safety event severity and frequency of the Refinery.

  • Develop complex reports for analyzing and interpreting process safety related data (eg. KPI, Incident and MOC trends); communicate and explain the findings to leadership team with insight into trends, their meaning, and improvement opportunities. 

  • Lead collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams (operations, asset integrity, process safety) to conduct analysis and compare internal vs external process safety performance to identify key trends and follow up actions; provide this insight to Refinery management to support decision making as it pertains to risk management.

  • Lead change by partnering with area stakeholders to develop required inputs for enhancing reporting and outcomes (eg. Define new data collection requirements for analysis); implement reporting best practices as defined by industry.

  • Provide informal leadership, guidance, and coaching to other process safety team members and stakeholders.

  • Cultivate trusting relationships and provide expertise on process safety data to the operational and senior leadership teams.

Professional skills

  • Ability to analyze, using recognized statistical analysis techniques, and understand large volumes of data

  • Ability to work with frontline and management to interpret and communicate results. 

  • Strong ability in MS Excel, PowerPoint; PowerBI or other analytical tools an asset.

  • Strong ability to present clear, compelling, and concise story.

  • Strong communicator.

  • Systematic thinker, high attention to detail, results driven.

Education and experience

  • Undergraduate in Business Administration, Engineering or Science.

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in process safety.

  • 3-5+ years’ experience in analysis, preferably in Oil industry considered an asset.
