Job Description

The Treasury team is one of the most critical teams in Investment Finance in that they are responsible for ensuring that all HOOPP's marketable securities trades and cash flows are reported on an accurate and timely basis. The Trade Settlement Management team is part of the Treasury team and is mainly responsible for the monitoring and confirmation of all trade settlements with HOOPP's custodian and brokers and to ensure the correct intended exposure to the markets.  

The Analyst, Trade Settlement Management has a detailed knowledge of all processes and procedures performed by the team. They must possess an excellent understanding of the products, and a general understanding of functions outside of the department such as Accounting, Risk Management, and Investment Management Reporting. This is required in order to understand and validate the impact of the team's functions on downstream processes. 

The Analyst is responsible for ensuring the timely and accurate settlement of marketable securities, and for ensuring that all settlement activity is reflected. Constant and effective communication is required, with Investment Management, HOOPP's custodian Northern Trust, and counterparties.  This action is required to facilitate accurate processing and to reduce/eliminate delays and discrepancies in settlement, thereby minimizing costs to HOOPP. 

What you will do:

  • Liaise with the custodian and counterparties regarding trade transactions to ensure that all trades are settled. The analyst would be responsible for the settlement of buys and sells of marketable transactions as well as settlements for collateral and securities lending/borrowing transactions. Reconcile HOOPP's end of day transactions/positions with custodian to ensure all trades are booked on a timely basis. The individual is responsible for ensuring that reconciling items are actively investigated and resolved.

  • Assist with the trade capture process for Marketable securities with Investment Management to ensure that all transactions are entered into HOOPP's book of records accurately and are communicated to the custodian for settlement. This process includes that all trades pre-match the counterparties before submission to the custodian for settlement. Any discrepancies must be identified and resolved before submission to the custodian to ensure settlement.

  • Reconcile daily position balances and activity for marketable transactions, collateral and security lending/borrowing trades, with the custodian, to ensure accurate position holdings and maintain the appropriate records for audit.

  • Ensure the accurate and timely confirmation and settlement of fixed income, equity, collateral and securities lending/borrowing transactions. Maintain daily records to establish completion.

  • Ensure all trade amendments are timely completed; notify custodian of all changes, and review transactions to ensure accuracy of trade details.

  • Ensure all broker settlements instructions, new and amended, are timely and accurately updated in SSCNet.

  • Assist with the identification and resolution of all claims relating to failed trades. Ensure that claim amounts are accurately calculated and all monies owing to HOOPP are collected.

  • Assist with the identification of opportunities for process improvements for all trade settlement management functions within the treasury team and assist with maintaining up to date documentation of key processes and procedures.

  • Serve as backup for the Senior Analyst, Trade Settlement Management.

  • Assist the team with managing the custodian relationship by raising concerns and offering solutions that may improve processes.

What you bring:

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in the financial sector, preferably in Treasury/Cash management

  • University degree in Business or related discipline

  • Completion or enrolment in a professional designation program (CFA, CGA, CMA) is an asset.

  • Strong knowledge of capital market instruments, fixed income and equities gained through industry experience.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Proactive self-starter who is highly motivated and results oriented

  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and completeness is very important along with the ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently

  • Ability to meet tight deadlines

  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.

  • Team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Willing to assume other responsibilities as required

  • Knowledge of investment accounting standards & principles

  • Knowledge of trade settlement market "best practices"

  • Relevant computer literacy is mandatory
