Job Description

The Canadian Global Investors (“CGI”) Team manage the EDC experience of key strategic relationships with Canada’s premier financial investors across multiple industry sectors.  The successful candidate will lead a team of Business Development professionals, supporting their engagement with customers and prospects to optimize opportunities for EDC solutions to support their international growth and risk management.  The CGI Team forms part of the Structured and Project Finance Group. The Director, CGI is responsible for establishing and executing the growth strategy for the CGI team, in alignment with the Global Business Development, Sectors & Advisory Group and other Business Development teams, that will position EDC’s identified strategic financial investors with an international growth strategy by providing growth capital and risk management solutions.
Discipline Summary 

  • Creates business development opportunities with large enterprises across a spectrum of industry sectors to support their international growth strategy
  • Locates, evaluates and recruits potential customers, buyers and qualified leads to ensure a substantive opportunity pipeline
  • Develops second-tier prospects for both national and international business development
  • Gathers and shares market intelligence across various sectors through external interactions with buyers, banks, exporters and sector associations to develop new opportunities and new services/solutions customized to clients' and/or sector needs
  • Promotes and sells a portfolio of services and/or solutions to current and new customers
  • Identifies, develops and typically closes new business development opportunities
  • Builds and maintains effective long-term relationships with assigned customers and prospects
  • Builds and maintains effective long-term relationships with different underwriting teams across EDC’s Financing and Insurance groups 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Establishes and executes the growth strategy that positions EDC to support the international growth of key strategic companies and sectors
  • Mobilizes EDC teams to support key customers and sectors with solutions that will serve as the catalyst for our customers’ international growth strategies
  • Forms part of the Customer team and develops direct relationships with the customers in her/his portfolio
  • Cultivates team commitment to Sales Excellence standards at EDC, in collaboration and alignment with other BD leaders, including effective onboarding, account planning, CRM, and other systems use
  • Coordinates and mobilizes resources to ensure optimal customer solutions balanced against EDC’s Corporate Risk Appetite Statement
  • Identifies, creates and develops new business opportunities with high business impact with both current and potential customers
  • Accountable for developing and implementing a business plan that ensures market/sector coverage, allocation of appropriate resources, and the establishment of business targets
  • Develops and maintains a network of contacts and influencers for partnerships and business opportunities and represents the Corporation by delivering speeches and presentations, and working with the media (including social media) and industry associations
  • Directs the performance and skill/career development of assigned teams to ensure teams have adequate capacity and capability to address the needs of the organization

Screening Criteria 

  • Completed an Undergraduate Degree in Business Administration, finance or in a related field
  • Minimum 10 years of business development experience in international business and/or financial services, or related EDC experience
  • Advanced knowledge of best practices in sales and/or account management
  • Minimum 3 years of leadership experience, with preference in a Business Development capacity
  • Bilingual in both official languages (French and English). Unilingual candidates will be considered and encouraged to apply; however, successful non-bilingual candidates will have to commit to a formal language development plan


  • MBA, CFA or equivalent

Salary Range

  • $124,800 - $187,300, plus performance-based incentive
