Job Description
The International Trade Guarantee (ITG) Regional Underwriter/Senior Underwriter manages a portfolio of Canadian Exporters with the objective of delivering the appropriate bonding solutions to facilitate international trade. The incumbent will be responsible for assessing risks, primarily related to the exporter (credit, technical, contractual and managerial), and structuring transactions (pricing, legal requirements, documentation, credit enhancements, etc.) in order to meet customer needs while satisfying EDC requirements. As a member of our Regional Underwriting, West team, they will work closely with his/her regionally based colleagues across Credits Insurance, Financing, and Business Development to engage locally with customers and financial partners, as required. As such, the ideal candidate will be comfortable and effective developing personal relationships, delivering presentations to small and large groups, and operating with a high degree of self-sufficiency.
Discipline Summary
- Assesses credit, technical, contractual and managerial risks of exporters and structures transactions including pricing, legal requirements, documentation, credit enhancements, etc., in order to meet customer needs while satisfying the corporation's risk management requirements
- Interacts and collaborates with domestic and foreign banks, sureties, account managers and customers to clarify the need and to structure the transaction appropriately
- Determines financial eligibility on Canadian exporters and performs credit risk analysis to understand the company's current and future capabilities with regards to all types of obligations (ex: debt repayment, profitability and cash flow management), and uses business/economic/political analytical thinking to identify other types of risks associated with the transaction
Responsibilities
- Assesses risks related to exporters (credit, technical, contractual, managerial, economic, political), negotiates and structures complex transactions (pricing, legal requirements, documentation) in order to meet customer needs and satisfy the Corporation's risk management requirements and presents results of risk analysis for approval within the proper guidelines and Delegation of Authority (DOA)
- Collaborates with Canadian and Foreign Banks, Sureties, EDC Business Development and Customers to develop and maintain key customer relationships and structure a transaction appropriately
- Partners with various internal subject matter experts to determine if transactions are viable and to mitigate risks
- Supports the performance, growth, and integrity of the program by setting underwriting policies, standards, and guidelines, ensuring adherence, leading continuous improvement activities, and delivering product enhancements and new products
- Develops and uses professional network (bankers and surety professionals) to strengthen and deepen risk analysis and understanding of the industry
Screening Criteria
- Undergraduate Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or other relevant discipline
- Minimum of 2-4 years (Underwriter, level 2), 5-6 years (Underwriter, level 3) or 7 years + (Senior Underwriter, level 4) experience in financial analysis or underwriting or related financial services experience
- Advanced knowledge of underwriting and/or financial transaction structuring and /or contract bonding principles and practices
- Significant experience leading and supporting the successful completion of increasingly complex commercial credit transactions across a variety of industry sectors and international markets
Assets
- MBA, CFA, CPA designation
- Bilingual in both official languages (French and English)
Salary Range
- Underwriter, level 2: $64,100 – $96,100 + performance-based incentive
- Underwriter, level 3: $75,700 - $113,600 + performance-based incentive
- Senior Underwriter, level 4: $89,000 – $133,600 + performance-based incentive
