Reporting to the Superintendent, Thermal Operations, the Staff Chemical Engineer/Technologist is accountable for standardizing and optimizing the chemical program for the SAGD facilities in the Lloydminster Thermal Business Unit by applying Class Management methodology. The successful candidate will develop and implement a consistent chemical management approach across all thermal facilities by working closely with Operations and chemical vendors to identify and initiate opportunities for improvement and by providing troubleshooting support for chemical-related challenges

This position is a full time, permanent position, working a 40 hour workweek located in our Lloydminster office. Relocation to the Lloydminster area is required.

Core Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities of the Staff Chemical Engineer/Technologist role include:

  • Work closely with operations and chemical vendors to understand business needs and recommend continuous improvement and innovation
  • Review Thermal wide chemical programs to ensure consistency, and opportunities for improvement in both chemical process efficiencies and cost reduction
  • Establish, monitor and report on chemical programs including site specific KPI's and chemical costs
  • Review 3rd party analytical data, including monthly reports, to ensure chemical programs are effective
  • Provide direction to chemical vendors with regards to chemical related projects or initiatives. SPOC for chemical vendor project requests
  • Facilitate field level chemical trials
  • Identify lessons learned and develop operating best practices to optimize the Thermal chemical program
  • Develop strong working relationships with various stakeholders including operations, chemical vendors and facility/plant engineers
  • Provide analytical and chemical technical support to operations
  • Engage in or support problem-solving by performing system analysis, interpreting data and providing written recommendations to ensure operations are performing at optimal levels
  • Support process troubleshooting initiatives on an as needed basis
  • Work with Operations to provide mentorship, coaching and training regarding facility chemical related tasks (lab testing, brine curves, etc.)

Experience:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Technical diploma/degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemical Laboratory Technology, or Petroleum Engineering Technology
  • Professional designation, such as, Professional Engineer or Professional Engineering Technologist
  • Minimum 15 years experience in the oil and gas industry working in a technical chemical support role and/or as a chemical program account manager with specific reference to chemical treatment program development, implementation, monitoring, and troubleshooting
  • 10 years of experience working in upstream or downstream oil and gas facilities (Thermal/SAGD experience preferred) is an asset
  • 4th Class Power Engineering certification or higher is an asset
  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or Microbiology is an asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Capable of working in a fast-paced work environment with dynamically shifting priorities and deadlines
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, organization and time management skills
  • Capable of working independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Safety Sensitive

As this position has been identified as safety-sensitive, employment of a final candidate selected for this position will be conditional upon successful completion of required pre-employment medical and alcohol/drug assessments

For this position, you will be required to maintain a Class 5 driver's license, a satisfactory driving record, and adhere to the appropriate Company policies and guidelines.  A driver's abstract will be one of the background checks requested in the pre-employment screening for the final candidate
